Things you need to know about MOTs
The MOT, originally called the 'Ministry of Transport' test is a legal safety test for cars, vans, motorbikes and other motor vehicles in the UK. There are a few things you need to be aware of regarding MOT Tests:
- MOT Tests are the owners responsibility. Although your vehicles MOT test information is held on the central DVLA database, it is your responsiblity to ensure that your MOT Certificate is up to date and valid.
- MOT Tests on all vehicles from 3 years old. All cars, vans and motorcycles that are 3 years or over require a valid MOT Test Certificate.
- Get your test in the month before your current Certificate expires. If you have a new Test completed during the month before your existing Certificate runs out, your new one will be dated to expire exactly a year on from the current one. However, if you do a new test more than a month before the expiry date, the new Certificate will be dated to expire exactly a year later from the Test date - which means you lose out.
- MOT costs vary but are capped to a maximum price. MOT Test costs do vary, although the Government does apply a top level. Please note that sometimes MOT Testing is offered at very cheap prices as often this guarantees they get the repair work as well, but this may not provide the best value to you as a customer.
Simple MOT Test Pre-checks
Across the UK over one third of MOTs are failed first time. This figure is surprisingly high particularly as many of these fails can be easily avoided. So before your MOT here are a few basics that we can all check:
- Lights. It is estimated that nearly 20%, 1 in 5, MOT tests fail because the vehicles lights are not in full working order. A simple check of all of the car lights - front, rear, headlights, dipped, indicators and hazzards - before the test could save you money.
- Tyre pressures and Tread. Tyres are a common MOT Test fail and so it is worth checking them prior to test. Make sure they are pumped up to the correct pressure (see your log book or the chart at a local petrol station where you are inflating them). Then take a look at the depth of the grooves/tread - this should be a minimum of 1.6mm across the tyre. You can do a basic check with a 20p coin - put it in the groove and if you can see the outer rim of the coin your tyres are likely to be illegal.
- Windscreen damage. Check for any damage to your windscreen as this is another area where car often fail. Any damage in the drivers central view should not exceed 10mm and across the rest of screen area (typically where your windscreen wipers go) should not exceed 40mm. The wipers themselves are also part of the test so check that they are not damaged and are working correctly.
These will stop your vehicle passing your test and so it is worth getting it fixed prior to your test. Willow Tree Cars can provide a full service for your car prior to the test if you require.
